First Happy Birthday to my father! He won't know about that unless someone tells him as he is not "online".
Today was the day of riding trams all around Oslo. Yesterday we concentrated on sites within walking distance or a ferry ride. Today we would visit some of the sites a little further out. Our first stop was the train station where we each got a 24 tram pass (for a mere 90 NOK each, thats $11) That allows us to ride all the trams or buses we want over a 24 hour period. We started by heading into north western Oslo to the Vigeland Park. This huge green space is filled with dozens (maybe even hundreds) of sculptures by Gustav Vigeland as well as over 150 varieties of roses. Together on 80 acres of land it becomes quite the site. See pictures to follow.
After the park it was back on the tram to the Oslo City Hall. The city hall is an elaborate building used not only for city business but it is also where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded each year. The inside is pretty nice with Italian marble floors and huge murals on all four walls depicting the history of Oslo. We grabbed a quick bite from the Deli de Luca and made it into a picnic Stortinget green way right in the middle of the old town.
Our next stop was the Akershus Fortress and Norwegian Resistance Museum. The Akershus Fortress or Castle is one of Oslo's oldest building (circa 1300). It overlooks the harbor and has some nice views. Inside the fortress is the resistance museum which tells of Norway's WWII experience.
After that is was back on the tram to the National Gallery to check out the original Scream painting by Edward Munch. There are some other famous works but Munch's steal the show. Back on, you guessed it, the tram, this time to the hotel. We find on trips its takes a few days to get used to lots of walking and standing and today our legs and feet were feeling it.
Here are our pictures for the day:
